Christmas in December

Behind the house there's a sunken garden With an inscription on the fence In loving memory of a family Who couldn't be what we needed then Little brother, we can walk there We can pay our respects and debts 'Cause if you think it's cold in the house Try being underground Where all our Christmases are just out of reach 80, 84, 87, 90, 93 Sambuca at 7am Folks we never knew we'd never see again Uncles, aunts and grandparents Wondering where those winters went and how We'll weather what comes next Little daughter, sit by the hearth there Your mother's on her way downstairs I know my focus can scatter like a snowdrift But right now I'm right here I'm right here All my Christmases are just out of reach 80, 84, 87, 90, 93 Sambuca at 7am Folks I never knew I'd never see again Uncles, aunts and grandparents Wondering where those winters went and how We'll weather what comes next And now we'll weather what comes next

I keep rolling up my sleeves It's pretty warm for Christmas Eve Streetlights all made up to look like candy canes 700 miles from all my old problems Drinking an ice cold Miller lite In a bar called Rock Bottom Ran out of cash on the last time I filled the tank Got a card but don't wanna pay the bank Should be wrapping presents for my seven year old son Yet I'm turning out my pockets in Amelia Cross the street and grit my teeth Gotta pay the piper someday Don't know what I thought I'd find In some midwestern alleyway Stores all dark behind the glass I guess I'll get myself up off the ground I'm gonna drive all night Far as the tank can get me And if heaven allows I'll be home by morning

KDEA-FM Bethlehem, Ohio, 2 a.m. A dedication to the weary faithful few On the road home to see the folks For Christmas Ghosts of girlfriends past, no-showed jobs and broke-up bands Come on fast as an avalanche Now your signal's weak, you slur your speech The flurries heap up on the streets This place never looked so clean The bar's a film they play Every year on Christmas day The faces never change The same song's always playing It's a dedication to the weary faithful few Aloof and alack, forever coming back For Christmas

Holy Star 02:35
Haven't had a good night's sleep When was the last time I can't recall Warm dreams always end, headache mornings rarely do Garden snakes are no illusion Betraying my heavy eyes Can't step into the same river twice Pledges to the angels and wishes upon stars The feeling of wonder gone useen Los Angeles at night, Christmas in June They don't make them like they used to Ivy going up the staircase It's a party, don't be late It's easy to forget how we spend most of our time It'll be the third Christmas since I've been inside a bar
